Why Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

United Nations member states committed to fully achieving 17 SDGs by 2030, which include 169 specific targets.

"We commit ourselves to working tirelessly for the full implementation of this Agenda by 2030."

On June 28, 2024, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs released the latest Sustainable Development Report. The report shows the global progress towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, indicating that the results are seriously off track. Among the specific goals, 18% have stagnated, and 17% are performing even worse than the 2015 baseline.

In response to that, Green Council launched the SDG Actions Hong Kong to promote sustainable development in Hong Kong. SDG Actions Hong Kong is a programme dedicated to unite the business sector, academia, and individual to collectively inspire, participate in, and empower Hong Kong to take meaningful and effective actions towards a sustainable future.

With the mission "Together Towards Tomorrow," the programme offers the latest information and knowledge on sustainable development and facilitates inter-organisational exchange to create a collaborative environment for sustainable development.
