Fueling the Future: Transition to a Hydrogen Economy
Towngas is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 through energy transition and innovation. With over 160 years of experience in hydrogen operations and a 3,700- km gas pipeline network, Towngas is developing projects to directly extract hydrogen from its gas network in Hong Kong for various applications to provide customers with a cleaner, more sustainable source of energy. The trial project at a padel court in Sai Kung is Towngas’ first hydrogen fuel cell power generation trial project for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, while the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bravo Transport Services Limited has marked a new chapter in the development of hydrogen energy transportation in Hong Kong. In addition, by utilising landfill gas to produce green hydrogen, Towngas and Veolia have launched Hong Kong’s first green hydrogen project and the first batch of locally produced green hydrogen is expected to be available in 2025. On the Chinese mainland, Towngas is participating in a feasibility study on blending hydrogen into natural gas pipelines and as an end-use energy source. By intensifying the green transformation of the existing gas pipeline network, Towngas will be able to reduce carbon emissions and achieve economic benefits. Towngas also established a clean energy application research institute, the Towngas Energy Academy, in Shenzhen, focusing on various aspects of smart green energy, including hydrogen. Additionally, through the TERA-Award Smart Energy Competition, Towngas is fostering collaboration and innovation in hydrogen technology and sustainable energy solutions on a global scale, offering rewards and support for hydrogen-related projects.
Achieving SDG7:
Ensure access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services & increase the share of renewable energy.
