Hin Keng Station – MTR 1st Green Railway Station

MTR strives to integrate environmentally conscious features into the design, planning, construction, and operation of its businesses. Hin Keng Station is the first Green Station in the MTR system and the first railway station in the world to receive an "Excellent" rating under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method ("BREEAM") In-Use certificate. The station serves as a good example of a green railway station with various features.

Hin Keng Station has adopted a semi-enclosed design that enables optimal natural lighting and cross-ventilation. The Next Generation Green Roof System which covers an approximate area of 5,000 square meters has been installed as well. Comparing with traditional green roof designs, Next Generation Green Roof System recycles, conserves and supplies water to effectively sustain vegetation growth in the long run with minimum irrigation.

Additionally, the station has implemented pilot applications for four kinds of solar technologies including Traditional Rigid Solar Panels, Flexible Solar Panels, Solar Glasses and Solar Pavers on the station roof, station cladding, station façade, and walkway utilizing different station areas. Generated energy will be used to support station operation.

Bird boxes have also been installed at the station to provide habitats for over ten birds species nearby. Ultrasonic Water Leakage Flowmeters have been implemented in the station to monitor water usage and prevent wastage. Furthermore, eco-brick made from of spoil ballast were used to build eco-planters outside the station to support upcycling efforts and enhance the surroundings.

Achieving SDG9:

Upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies.
