Construction of San Shek Wan Sewage Treatment Works, Associated Submarine Outfall and Pui O Sewerage Works [Contract No. DC/2020/02]

The project is to collect sewage generated by residents and nearby facilities at South Lantau Island and discharge to the sea through submarine discharge pipelines after proper treatment. Thereby, reduce the water pollution of the sewage to the water quality near Pui O Wan and the environment. The works to be executed under this contract involves construction of

  • Construction of a secondary sewage treatment works (STW) at San Shek Wan in South Lantau;

  • Construction of a sewage pumping station (SPS) at Pui O;

  • Construction of submarine outfall for the disposal of treated effluent from the STW at San Shek Wan;

  • Construction of gravity sewers and twin rising mains along South Lantau Road and Chi Ma Wan Road and at Pui O Lo Uk; and

  • Ancillary works.

Achieving SDG6:

The project constructs a sewage treatment plant and related sewage collection facilities to collect sewage from South Lantau, thereby substantially improving water quality by reducing water pollution and minimizing the discharge of harmful substances.

The project applied various innovative construction methods and technologies during construction period, which will substantially reduce the impact on the nearby environment and water quality during construction, such as:

  • Construction of submarine outfall by using Twin-way Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Technique;

  • Install temporary wastewater treatment system on site;

  • Recycle and reuse sewage after simple treatment;

  • Installation of suspended solid sensor at discharge point of wastewater treatment system;

  • Using underwater drone to increase the inspection frequency for silt curtains during the marine works; and

  • Check water quality at Pui O Beach.
